selling weed to boomers

We’ve partnered with Leeds Arts University to give a platform to the brightest young voices in advertising today. Here, Millie Addinall identifies the next big cannabis consumer: baby boomers.

What if recreational cannabis were to be legalised in the UK?

The support is certainly there. In my survey of people 18+, 49% of respondents expressed support for recreational use, while 28% opposed it and 23% were unsure.

Then the question arises: if it were to be legalised, how would we advertise it?

Based on all the research gathered, I decided to task myself with creating a set of responsible advertisements that followed the same guidelines set by the ASA for alcohol.

In my research, I came across a brand called Dispenseree. They are a UK dispensary online company, who believe in ethically selling TCH, and CBD products.

I gave them a problem for marketing to overcome:

‘Although cannabis has been legalised, people are still unaware of its benefits and where to obtain it.’

In this case, the target audience I chose were Boomers (aged 57-75).

This is an audience that could potentially really benefit from the use of cannabis, whether that’s those suffering with aches and pains, to those suffering with more extreme conditions. They’re taking daily pills to keep them feeling healthy, but maybe there’s a more natural way.

It’s not that they don’t believe in using cannabis, it’s just been illegal for most of their lives, they’re not too sure where to start now.

This led me to the big idea: Now, more than ever.

Getting old sucks, but now cannabis is legal, they can finally experience its benefits when it’s needed most.
