Summer, at least in the northern hemisphere, is nearly over. Bugger. Can we at least have a bit of fun as we all trudge back to school? Sure. Let’s have a little friendly competition. Back in July we casually asked…

And we got a violently emotional response. But alas, there was no clear way to identify a winner. So we’ve made another World Cup!

Firstly, before you say it, yes there are differences between “tag lines” and “slogans” and “end lines” – what they are, how they’re used, whether they’re enduring or for a campaign etc. Ignore the communication hierarchy for a minute and embrace the list.

Secondly, let’s be clear. This is not rigorous. We took the responses and created a very fluffy way of ranking repetition, likes and cultural impact. We’ve tried to group the lines as randomly as possible.

And thirdly, diversity. Although many famous global lines are in English, the drawback of using responses from our followers and our own personal curation is the lack of non-English input.

Lastly, just as this season has proved VAR still makes mistakes, classic lines will have slipped through the net. Sorry. We couldn’t include them all. Please see the original twitter thread for all the excellent submissions. But screaming at our omissions is all part of the fun.

We will conduct the World Cup as Twitter Polls so please share this article now(!) and then vote / retweet as we go so we get the largest sample size possible.
